DOMAINE FRANÇOIS COTAT Sancerre, Les Monts Damnés 2018

Les Monts Damnés in known as one of the premier sites in Sancerre for Sauvignon Blanc and the 2018 from François Cotat is simply brilliant. The vineyard is known for its steep slopes and Kimmeridgian chalk soils left from ancient seabeds. Cotat harvests everything by hand and presses the fruit whole-cluster using an old wooden vertical press. The wine is then aged in older tonneaux and bottled by hand, unfined and unfiltered. The result is a simply gorgeous Sancerre that is remarkably precise and focused. It begins with wonderful aromas of fresh sliced quince, meyer lemon, wildflowers, dried wild herbs and crushed saline infused stones all developing in the glass. On the palate this displays outstanding definition, with a beautifully textured mouthfeel framed by bright acidity that provides wonderful energy through the mineral laced finish. This is an absolutely sensational bottle of Sancerre that is stunning in its youth, but also has the ability to age for quite some time. There are few that can match the style and quality of François Cotat.
