The 2018 Martin Stelling Vineyard from Nickel and Nickel is absolutely stunning. The vineyard was planted in 1993 and is located in Oakville at the base of the western hills, situated on its own alluvial fan, with soils that are composed of deep volcanic loam with underlying clay and gravel. As far as the wine itself, it instantly opens to seductive aromatics of ripe blackberries and dark currants, which are woven together with roasted coffee, pencil lead, crushed gravel, bell pepper and spices which all come together and burst from the glass. The palate is full-bodied plush and supple, with concentrated layers of delicious ripe dark fruits that combine with graphite and spices leading up to the enveloping finish. While the 2018 is already drinking exceptionally well, it should also age gracegully and have a brilliant future ahead.
