FORCE MAJEURE Syrah 2014

((Release Jan 2017) This estate Syrah has one percent Viognier blended into the wine. The Viognier was fermented in concrete and the Syrah was also mostly fermented in concrete prior to blending. This impressive Syrah wine begins with aromatics reminiscent of white pepper, anise, blackberry jam, sagebrush and crushed wildflowers. There are deep flavors of black cherry, anise, creme cassis, black olive, and spicebox. The texture is gorgeous and the brisk minerality is impressive considering the heat of the vintage. Similar to the other Force Majeure bottlings, this wine can benefit from a two plus hour decant prior to enjoying. This is a decadant effort by head winemaker Todd Alexander. I am very surprised how close this bottling connects to a great Napa Syrah, as this wine has similar tension, black fruit flavor and aromatic profiles. (Best 2017-2028) - August, 2016 (OB)
