The 2001 Château Mouton Rothschild is wonderful showing from a challenging vintage in the left bank. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, this begins with aromatics of dark fruits, leather, damp earth and wet gravel all developing in the glass. On the palate this possesses a gorgeous silky texture, with outstanding balance and notable concentration considering the cooler conditions that occurred late in the growing season. While the 2001 is certinaly enticing at this stage, it happens to be lacking some of the characteristics readers might expect from a classic vintage of Mouton. Nonetheless, this is still an excellent wine, which drinking beautifully right now and should go on to provide another decade of enjoyment.
