CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD Pauillac 2008

The 2008 Château Mouton Rothschild is an absolutely sensational showing, and could ultimately be the top wine out of this challenging vintage, which will be remembered for its cool, dry conditions for most of the growing season. Mouton clearly did not seem to have an issue overcoming the challenges and achieving sufficient ripeness levels, as this blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot and it is shaping up beautifully at this stage. It instantly opens to stunning aromas of ripe ripe black currants, cassis, exotic spices, tobacco, meat blood, espresso and chocolate nuances all come together and burst from the glass. On the palate this is medium to full-bodied and opulent with gorgeous velvety tannins, with excellent structure and remarkable overall balance of fruit and fresh acidity. It continues to impress as it remains beautifully focused and persistence through the finish. The 2008 is developing into an absolutely gem, and while it is quite impressive today, it is ultimately still quite youthful and should go on to thrive in the cellar for another two decades.
