The 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from La Bastide Saint Dominique is composed primarily of Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault rounding out the blend. The fruit was sourced from vines 25 to 80 years old planted to soils of sands and clays, with round pebbles in the areas of Les Bédines, Chapouin, Pignan and Guigasse. The wine itself opens to vivid aromas of raspberries and red plums which combine with licorice, herbs, spices, chocolate shavings, lavender and hints of minerals all taking shape. On the palate this is elegant and refined, with a beautiful silky texture and wonderful overall finesse. It displays wonderful overall balance and a fresh juicy core that expands through the pretty finish. This is a fantastic showing that should age marvelously over the next decade and beyond.
