The 2012 Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘GT-1’ is a knockout effort by Dirk Vermeersch and is clearly amongst the top wines from the entire appellation in this vintage. This outstanding blend of equal parts Grenache/Syrah instantly wins you over with its gorgeous purity and seductive aromas of ripe raspberries and roasted plums, followed by smoke, licorice, spices and forest floor, which leap from the glass. It continues to impress on the full-bodied palate with its rich, layered texture, backed by round tannins and a wonderful velvety mouth feel. This remains concentrated and focused all the way through the long, silky finish that lingers on and on. Even at this early stage the wine is already showing terrific but also looks to have excellent aging potential as well. (Best 2015-2031) - October, 2014 (JD)
