The 2001 Gran Reserva is gorgeous Rioja. More than two decades since harvest and this is still incredibaly youthful. It offers striking aromas of fresh red cherries and sliced strawberries woven together with iron, blood, leather, dried flowers, spices and minerals all taking shape in the glass. On the palate this is medium-bodied, refined and beautifully structured with fine tannins underlined by bright acidity keeping it fresh and vibrant. This continues to impress with its remarkable overall balance and finesse as it heads into the long, pretty finish that is marked by gorgeous red fruits and light spice notes. This classically made Rioja is completely compelling, but patience still be required as this will need some additional bottle age before it reaches its full potential.
