Las Iruelas is a simply thrilling wine from one of Spain's most talented winemakers Daniel Landi. This 100% Garnacha is sourced from a plot of 60+ year old head-pruned vines planted in sandy granite, schist, quartz and clay soils at an elevation of over 3,000 feet above sea level in the Sierra de Gredos. It underwent natural yeast fermentation in open vats, whole cluster and was aged 16 months in 500L French oak barrels. The wine itself is nothing short of sensational as it instantly begins with striking aromatics of wild red berries, fresh flowers, orange peel, dried herbs, incense and a stony mineral character all working beautifully together. On the palate this is medium-bodied, with incredible finesse and elegance. It displays remarkable precision, with a vibrant, focused core laced with gorgeous notes of red fruits, rose petals and spices that expand seamlessly through the long silky finish. While the 2016 is certainly utterly fascinating today, it should only become more compelling over time. Sierra de Gredos is becoming well-recognized for some of Spain's most exciting wines and there is no person more responsible for this than Daniel Landi, who has pioneered this emerging area, and is producing some of the worlds finest wines.
