PAUL LATO Pinot Noir, Sta Rita Hills ‘Stand By Me Drum Canyon Vineyard’ 2020

This wine comes entirely from Calera clone Pinot Noir, with vine cuttings originally smuggled in from Burgundy in suitcases. It is wholly destemmed, fermented in two-ton lots, and aged in 57% new French oak barrels. I love the tension and beauty of this wine on the nose - it’s truly outstanding and decadent. Think of intricate aromas of freshly picked red raspberry, wild mountain strawberry, blueberry, fennel fronds, cedary herbs, baking spices, and violet flower, finishing with a slight dose of citrus oil. The finish begets delectable acidity, rounded silky tannins, a medium to full-body, and a fruity yet savory ending. Just 175 cases were made.
