BETZ FAMILY WINERY Syrah, Yakima Valley ‘La Côte Patriarche’ 2021

I am blown away by the 2021 La Serenne Syrah from one of the best winemakers in the state of Washington, Louis Skinner. Showcasing a brooding deep purple and blue core that moves to a neon pink-purple rim, it’s as eye-pleasing as it is delicious. If you want to taste one of the best Syrah’s coming from Washington in 2021, go find a bottle of La Serenne now before it is all sold out. The nose is elegant but meaty at the same time - expressing aromas of black cherry, macerated boysenberry, smoked meat, brined olives, crushed peppercorns, cedary herbs, and dried violet flowers. A lush and velvety character slides across the palate, delivering sweet integrated tannins and perfected levels of acidity. It’s one of those wines that grabs your attention quickly and doesn’t let go, is perfectly balanced, and nears perfection. This will be a fun wine to open in a decade to see how everything evolves. It needs some time in the bottle, so better wait for 2024 or 2025. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.
