Old vines of 26 years produce the fruit for the scintillating 2021 Il Padrino Syrah from master winemaker Paul Lato. Aged for 19 months in 66% new French oak barrels, it sports a dark glimmering neon purple core with a lighter purple rim. This wine literally sits with elegance on the tongue, delivering phenomenal notes of fresh blue plum, wild mountain huckleberry, candied blueberries, saline, powdered graphite, dried mountain herbs, and crushed pink peppercorn. Rounded and crunchy tannins merge perfectly with the elegant and delicate acidity. I loved the shades of bacon fat I get on the mid-palate during the long and mouthwatering finish. Only seven barrels produced. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.
