Finishing things off is the 2020 Side Effect by Massalto, which is 100% Syrah that saw 50% whole cluster and barrel fermentation and then aged in 100% new French oak. Displaying a brooding dark purple core with a brickish rim, it over-delivers on the nose with earthy and meaty aromas of crushed black pepper, crushed Spanish olives, black-peppered charcuterie, grapefruit pith, crushed stones, dusty attic, and grated chocolate mingling alongside the fresh blackberry fruit tones. Perfect acidity levels aid the finish that goes on forever. The quality of this wine for $60 is incredible. Only 110 cases made. Better in 2024.1 Highly recommended and editor’s choice.
