A cult-classic amount wine aficionados, the 100% Syrah 2020 Bionic Frog from Cayuse stuns from beginning to end. Don’t let the cartoony label fool you, this is a serious bottle of wine that was aged for 18 months in 15-20% new French oak barrels and sports a dark purple and garnet core with a lighter purple rim. Dark fruit dominates, with black plum flesh and currants taking center stage. Then comes the meaty aspects alongside toasted black peppercorn and touches of smoked pork. Crisp acidity and silky tannins merge on the palate, and it finishes with a stony minerality and meaty component that I couldn’t get enough of. Just 543 cases made.
