HAZELFERN Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley ‘Prime Cut’ 2021

The 2021 Prime Cut Pinot Noir is a stunning Pinot Noir selected from the best barrels of the vintage. 15% whole cluster is used during fermentation, while it’s aged for 16 months on 30% new French oak. This is a Pinot Noir that exemplifies how this varietal can be made in Oregon to compete with some of the best wines of Burgundy. In a blind, I would call this Grand Cru Burgundy, but it’s made in Oregon at the price point of only $85. A neon garnet and ruby core with a fluorescent pink rim displays beautifully in the glass. Vibrant notes of macerated strawberries, dusty road, crushed stones, freshly picked mountain herbs, and dried purple wildflowers spill from the glass and keep you coming back for more. Incredibly balanced and refined on the palate with silky smooth tannins and lush lemony acidity, leading to a finish that flirts with perfection. This is a wine that should age for the next 15 years with proper cellaring. Only 175 cases made. Highly recommended and Editor’s Choice.
