DEVIL PROOF Malbec, Rockpile Ridge 2017

The 2017 Rockpile Ridge Malbec from Devil Proof is sourced from the Rockpile Ridge vineyard, which is located in the Rockpile appellation in Northern Sonoma County, the smallest AVA in the United States. The vineyard sits at an elevation of 1,380 feet, with vines sloping down towards the Lake Sonoma basin, which helps provide moderate temperatures and forceful coastal breezes. This is an intense Malbec that displays a dark menacing inky color, and releases aromas of ripe blackcurrants and black cherries that are laced with mocha, graphite dusting, violets, baking spices and crushed stones that all emerge from the glass. On the palate this is full-bodied and deeply concentrated, but it also possesses a notable streak of minerality that underlines its ripe expressive core. It continues to impress as it seamlessly deliver layers of beautifully concentrated ripe dark fruits all the way though the long expansive finish. This is quite the tour de force when it comes Malbec, it is certainly amongst the most compelling expressions of Malbec being made in the United States.
