DEVIL PROOF Malbec, Sonoma County ‘Farrow Ranch’ 2019

The 2019 Devil Proof Farrow Ranch is not only my favorite Malbec I’ve ever experienced but also one of the best wines I’ve had all year. Resting for 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels, the wine glows a deep purple and blackberry-colored core with a slightly lighter purple rim. Brooding and decadent on the nose - think aromas of macerated blackberries, dark brandied cherries, melted chocolate, cedary herbs, and just a hint of tobacco and wet loamy earth. I literally couldn’t stop smelling this wine and it took me 15 minutes for me to take a sip. But when you do, you are gifted with additional flavors of boysenberry fruit leather and toasted clove alongside crunchy sweet tannins, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and an earthy, spicy, black-fruited finish that grabs you and doesn’t let go. Just over 400 cases of this perfect Malbec were produced. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.
