Concluding the excellent new lineup of wines from this estate, the 2005 'Gran Reserva' by Ontañon is a delicious Rioja that shows some nice cellaring potential. While Ontañon's estate is located outside of Logroño, their vineyards are located in Rioja Baja at high elevations. The 'Gran Reserva' was aged 24 months in American oak prior to bottling. Having a slighter deeper core than the 'Reserva' bottling, this wine begins with a bouquet of black cherry, black olive, coffee grounds and hints of leather as this shows a darker aromatic profile than its 'Reserva' cousin. The wine has flavors of black cherry, cran-pomegranate, with nice weight and a lingering finish. This shows the masculine side of this great vintage.(Best 2016-2028) - July, 2016 (OB)
