The 2006 Chateau Haut-Brion is a stunning effort from this famed Grand Cru estate. Comprised of 57% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the wine needs more than a one hour decant to display its dazzling aromatics and flavors. As this begins to open it releases overwhelming aromas of mocha, sage, anise and gorgeous cassis all taking shape beautifully in the glass. The red blend has spectacular, concentrated flavors of dark fruits layered with anise, smoke, spicebox, tar and freshly ground coffee. Moderately tannic at this stage, this age-worthy wine is just starting all come together. Overall, the 2006 is a wonderful showing, offering an impressive blend of flavors and minerality, with an exceedingly long finish. This is an incredible effort from Haut-Brion in a difficult vintage.
