The 2020 Claret by Matthews clocks in as 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Franc and the rest small parts of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Deep purple in color, the nose shows slight cherry cola and oak. Medium bodied with a fine tannic structure, the entry has a pleasant mouthfeel. Showing plum, marionberry, red and black licorice and raw cherry pipe tobacco, this wine is well constructed and seamless. Mid-palate thru finish flash slight chocolate, a combination of both milk and bittersweet. This is an incredible value from Matthews and is a great introduction to their stable of well-made wines. This wine is approachable now and has 10-15 years of enjoyment ahead of it.
