Out of all of Matt Reynvaan’s 2018 Syrahs, his “The Contender” Syrah is probably the most easy drinking. This is a wine to be enjoyed with or without food. Now don’t get me wrong, just because I state that this wine is easier to drink, doesn’t mean that it isn’t a fascinating and complex wine, because it is. Chocolate covered black cherry, toasty espresso powder, fresh violet petals and ground green peppercorn form the marvelous nose. After an hour or so, blue fruits became more prominent in the glass, with secondary expressions of peppered charcuterie showing. The core of this Syrah is solid with medium plus acidity and a full and lengthy mouthfeel. On the palate flavors of macerated black raspberry, ground white pepper, cacao nibs balance perfectly with the savory components of ox blood, saline and dried thyme. Ready to drink now, but age beautifully for another decade or more.
