It all began in the early eighties, when Salvatore Di Gaetano, a businessman with a passion for his homeland, saw the right elements in this picture-postcard landscape to be the home for his freely declared passion: high-quality wine.
Located in the province of Trapani, where centuries of vine growing have given this area a natural ability to produce wines with a strong sense of identity. Salvatore wanted to keep tradition, and decided to gamble on the oenological potential of the indigenous varietals of the Nero d’Avola, Perricone and Nerello Mascalese, but also Zibibbo, Grillo and Catarratto. The decision has paid off, as today Firriato is producing some of the finest examples of these varietals in Sicily.
One of the oldest production companies in Sicily, Firriato is now one of the leading producers on the island, and has increased its original production area from the countryside of Trapani, investing in new property in Etna and the Aegadian Islands. The new estates, Cavanera on the volcano and Calamoni on Favignana have enabled Firriato to make wines from the different terroir of Sicily.
Today the wines are as impressive as ever and the Di Gaetano family continues to strive to make outstanding wines from across Sicily and move forward with Salvatore's dream of making world-class wines from the Island.
