The story of Cauyse begins near the village of Charly-sur-Marne in the Champagne region of France, where a very young Christophe Baron walked the family vineyard with his father and grandfather. Christophe comes from a Family of Vignerons, and winemaking is in his blood as he grew up watching his farther make wine and studying viticulture in Champagne and Burgundy. Soon after his studies, Christophe decided he was not ready to enter the family business and wanted to travel the world. During his travels, an unexpected winery internship brought Christophe to the Walla Walla Valley for the first time in 1993.
When he completed his internship, Christophe continued to travel and gain more experience in Australia, New Zealand, Romania and Oregon. He intended to buy some land and start a Willamette Valley vineyard from scratch, Those plans came to an end in 1996 when he returned to the Walla Walla for a strictly social visit and discovered an open field littered with acres of softball-sized stones.
Christophe decided he wanted to buy the property and plant a vineyard there. Many thought the decision to plant a winery in. Afield of stones was crazy, but the rest is History. In 1997 Christophe purchased the property and planted his first vineyard in the Stones of the Walla Walla Valley. Cayuse was born, and the rest is history.
Today Cause is one of Washington's premier wineries and make some of the most sought after wines which have a cult following. With Christophe's success many have followed his footsteps and Walla Walla has become one of the most ideal places in the world for growing Grenache and Syrah.
Christophe has gone on to start other labels including Horsepower wines and No Girls, both which have also earned some of the highest acclaim in Washington.
The story goes on as Christophe and Elizabeth Bourcier, Assistant Vigneronne, continue to make some of Washington's finest wines from Rhône varietals that will rival the best from anywhere in the world.
